Humanitarian Pete Killcommons brings medical technology to remote regions of the developing world. Although based in San Francisco as Chief Executive Officer of Medweb, Killcommons spends his free time in charitable efforts around the globe. Some of Pete Killcommons’ most notable humanitarian achievements have occurred in the nation of Afghanistan.
During his first visit to Afghanistan in relation to Medweb’s contracts with the United States Armed Forces, Pete Killcommons engaged in charitable efforts in the war-torn country. He worked with the Rotary Foundation International in order to assist hospitals in Jalalabad and Kabul. He also installed imaging equipment and set up telemedicine services which connect Afghan hospitals and doctors with teaching facilities in Pakistan. Killcommons has also worked to improve midwifery services in the region, creating applications which allow midwives and patients to track health data and receive advice and diagnosis by cell phone.
Interested in alternative energy, and especially solar technologies, Pete Killcommons has provided solar-thermal heating systems to several hospitals in Afghanistan. These systems provide heat and hot water in the absence of dependable municipal utilities. In addition, while traveling in Afghanistan to train doctors in the use of imaging technologies and telemedicine, he paid for a new well for a struggling village, helping to guarantee clean water and improve local health.
Pete Killcommons has participated in medical missions to Peru and Haiti. He avidly supports Fisher House, a charity that assists military families while their injured service members are hospitalized or in rehabilitation. He also donates to Catholic Charities, the American Red Cross, and Rotary International. He volunteers as a pilot for disaster response and search and rescue, and he has participated in emergency exercises organized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
